What Factors Are Important When Purchasing a Cymbal Bag?

If you’ve decided that it’s time to browse the internet for the perfect bag, you’re on the right track.

But, first, you should know what you’re looking for. If you were to find the perfect cymbal bag, how would you know it?

Before any purchase, but certainly before the biggest decision of your life, you should take the time to consider which factors are most important to you.

If you’ve never taken the time to consider what you want in a cymbal bag, here are a few tips on what you should look for.

5 things to consider when looking for your perfect cymbal bag

1. Durability: Will it last?

Are you comfortable purchasing a cymbal that’s affordable, but made with less durable material?

Or, do you want this cymbal bag to last beyond the last encore?

Keep in mind that cymbals are a pretty heavy piece of drumming equipment and depending on your lifestyle – whether you’re a professional drummer playing gigs every night or a casual drummer who jams in others’ garages – your cymbal bag will need to take whatever comes it’s way.

With a hard cymbal case, durability is not really an issue. Compared to cymbal bags, cymbal cases are usually made of hard plastic which is conducive to a rugged lifestyle. Strongly consider getting a cymbal case if you transport your kit frequently.

Cymbal Bags on the other hand, though less durable than cases, are lighter and generally more portable, as they typically don’t have a rigid shape. Ultimately, you’ll need to decide if you value portability more or durability.

Undoubtedly, there are cymbal cases and bags with a nice balance of both portability and durability, but as the timeless cliché goes, “You get what you pay for.”

As a note, “cymbal bag” and “cymbal case” are often used interchangeably in product descriptions. It’s the material the case or bag is made out of that makes the difference here, not the name.

2. Size: Will it fit?

Be sure to choose the right size case or bag for your cymbals. You’ll also want to be sure to get a cymbal bag that has enough space to hold all of your cymbals.

You’ll also want to be sure to check that the cymbal bag is big enough for the size cymbals you have.

For example, if your largest cymbals are 24” in diameter, you of course don’t want to purchase a bag that only fits 22” cymbals.

3. Additional Features: What extras do you get?

Wheels, Straps, extra pockets galore!

Features increase the accessibility, transportability, and overall efficiency of your bag.

Extra pockets for holding your hi-hats and splashes or your drumsticks, shoulder straps so that you can carry your cymbal bag handsfree as a backpack, or wheels, which tend transporting most things easier.

4. Price: Of course… how much will this set you back?

As mentioned before and as is the case with most things, you’ll often have to pay more for higher quality. There are certainly exceptions to this rule, but don’t take the risk on buying a cheap item and hoping to find a gem.

That is, unless, you’re specifically looking for cheap gear.

Sort this out before you pull out your credit card. Generally, you should expect to pay between $45 – $200 for a cymbal bag depending on the brand, size, and included features.

5. Reputation: Is it from a trustworthy brand?

If it’s your first time buying a product or trying a new brand, how can you know what to expect? The experiences of other customers can be a great indicator. Be sure to do your research on both the quality of the cymbal bag itself and the purchase experience of other customers.

There you have it! Those are the things I recommend looking for in cymbal bags! Have I missed anything? Let me know in the comments below.
